SA BOOTHROYD Sa Boothroyd is a west coast artist, wife, and mother of two young children, with a wacky sense of humour. She refers to herself as ‘printmaker, teamaker, troublemaker’, and definitely has the ability to make people laugh. Her given name, Susan, was long ago dropped in favour of her nickname “Sa”, an unusual name for an unusual woman. After completing her art education with a diploma in illustration, Sa quickly picked up printmaking, “hoping it would get her out of debt”. She has sold her work in craft shows and galleries, and now, sixteen years later she has a studio and successful art shop in Gibsons, BC where she creates and sells her prints, wall plaques, humourous coasters, greeting cards, and fridge magnets. She also does a lot of commissions. In her own words, “Making my living as an artist is usually fun, sometimes a drag, always challenging.” Living on British Columbia’s sunshine coast, Sa has a wonderful environment in which to try her hand at gardening, and to “run, bike and swim a bit”, activities she pursues in order to maintain her sanity. When asked where she gets her ideas, Sa states, “Anywhere; listening to CBC radio, reading text and seeing the words differently or out biking when my mind is clear, ideas come to me.” Shmilar Kwong is pleased to be your exclusive source for Sa’s fridge art in Old Strathcona. |
