Russian Folk Art :

|
Matrioshkas and decorated eggs are examples of traditional Russian folk art, each one uniquely hand decorated in the methods that make them truly collectible. The Russian matrioshka, painted wooden dolls nestled one into another, has a history of approximately a century. It is perhaps one of the best-known symbols of Russia and Russian folk art. Traditionally a child’s toy, the first matrioshka reflected the image of a healthy peasant girl, with similar images on the dolls within. The name itself is closely related to the Russian word for “mother” revealing that the matrioshka is also a symbol of motherhood and fertility. Today matrioshka painting is drawing on the modern world for images, which can range from satirical political leaders to fine art reproduction, religious iconography to beautiful landscapes. Easter is perhaps the most important religious holiday in Orthodox cultures, celebrated with the blessing and giving of hand-painted eggs. Decorative eggs have become a collectible that equals or surpasses the demand for matrioshkas.
