The Russian matrioshka, painted wooden dolls nestled one into another, has a history of almost a century. It is perhaps one of the best-known symbols of Russia and Russian folk art. Traditionally a child’s toy, the first matrioshka reflected the image of a healthy peasant girl, with similar images on the dolls within. The name itself is closely related to the Russian word for “mother” revealing that the matrioshka is also a symbol of motherhood and fertility. Today matrioshka paintings can range from satirical political leaders to fine art reproductions, religious iconography to beautiful landscapes.
